Torreys Peak – 14,275′ – Emperor Gully – 6/23/2017 – 3K’+ of Vertical

Facebook is cool, they posted a memory the other day of a descent of Torreys with Dr. Turnsallyear Ross from 4 years ago. What a fun line and with soaring temps of late I thought it would be a nice descent, high and long. Me and Ally headed over there nice and early to drop a car at the Grizzly and then head up to the Stevens Gulch trailhead. We got on the trail and made really good time to the summit. It was nice not having to bring crampons and axe or whippet. Made it to the top in 2:20, feeling pretty fit of late. Being able to bike and laying off the cigarettes has really helped. At the top we ran into Russ and Eric from Dynafit. They asked me where I got my skis and told them marketing. Should have said a guy in a van in Salt Lake. It would have been funny but cruel. Grand Theft Demo Gear was so messed up. Anyway we watched them drop into Dead Dog and then made our way to the Emperor and our objective.

After a short down climb to get to the snow we strapped them on and found icy conditions at the first steep. Then it got really soft to skier’s left. Lower down the snow was more solid and the turns just kept coming. about 3 quarters of the way down the snow ended for a short stretch. We traversed to the next line over and skied it to the bottom, almost to the creek. The 3 stream crossings were so refreshing and it was sweet to have such great weather. This is a classic that should be repeated often.
