Mount Wilson 14,252′ Box Car Couloir 4/17/2017 – Plan B was awesome

With Silverton Splitfest finishing up I got in touch with Pat and we made a plan. We met at the springs and headed over to get a look at the Coors Face of Wilson Peak. We didn’t like what we saw. We headed to up the Rock of Ages trailhead or at least tried to; we got just past the intersection 3.8 miles from the trailhead. So much for the idea of doing all three lines in a day. We headed over to the Cross Mountain trailhead and got some shut eye. 3am came early and I realized that I didn’t have the map loaded on the phone. After a quick trip all the way to the circle near Telluride it was time to gear up and make some coffee. We hit the trail at 4:30 and made good time into Slate Creek, just in time for the alpenglo.

The weather was a bit weird with high cirrus setting in mid morning. The summit pitch wasn’t in for skiing so we left the gear at the saddle and hit the summit pitch. Not the biggest fan of downclimbing. The snow for the descent was a mix of everything. We had wind slab, powder, corn and refrozen corn. The Box Car Couloir was money for most of it even though there had been a couple groups through there over the weekend. The choke was icy. It was a fun day overall though the snow doesn’t really seem all the way spring like.

Thanks for another fun tour Pat. Stoked we got something done given getting shut down with Plan A. Until the next time.
