Dyer Mountain 13,855′ Northeast Slopes and South Saddle 11/8/09
Great getting out with you. Nice to get another centennial done and with a new partner nonetheless
Sweet Pics and so fun to ski some corn in November
Quick note on snowpack. We found a very thick hard slab, pencil hard and about 8 inches thick on a 30* slope, NE facing. I forgot my saw so only a shear test and the shear was quality 2. There was another hard slab about 3 inches below that and 2′ thick with a quality 3 shear. Below that were rounded grains for 2 feet to the 5″ from the ground. Then a thin but seemingly nonreactive layer and some facet development at the ground. No ice layers and i had a really, realy tough time trying to get the lower snow to fail. The 1.5 x 1.5 meter top slab was well over 35 pounds but seemed to be bonded reasonably well. All in all it seemed like a well bridged and reasonably safe slope. Above us was a pocket of old snow on a 38* slope, but we didn’t get into that area cause we wanted to get back to the south slopes for some skiing.
I felt like a kid again sessioning that wind lip.
