Mount Massive 14,421′ East Face to Southwest Slopes 5/24/09

Got out for a solo trip yesterday. 4 wheeled up the Halfmoon road to the North Massive trailhead. That’s a fun road. Not hard but with one nice corner. Got to the trailhead and started at the crack of 7am. Made good time to the summit and skied off the top.

The snow at this point in the season is not good. All this wet weather and a lack of nighttime freezing temps has created some less than safe conditions. The East face was fine from a safety point of view but the new snow that we’ve gotten is very moist and the upper snow was very sticky, even with warm wax on the boards.

The Southwest Slopes were some of the mankiest junk snow I’ve ever been on. Like chunky mashed potatoes. I even kicked off a sizeable wet slide with a ski cut and got dragged down about 40 feet. It was a little more loaded there and slid at the dust layer. I used my ski pole handle as a rudder and got out. I wasn’t even worried while it was happening.

I got in about 2,800′ of vert and kept my skis on the whole way from the top. 🙂

I had planned to go do Harvard today but I have to say skiing is done unless we get a few freezing nights soon. I guess it’s time to start biking and working on the house
