Torrey’s Peak 14,267′ Tuning Forks 5/16/2012 Almost But Still an Awesome Ski
After Handies I headed over Cinnamon Pass and had some lunch in Silverton. I love that drive. The road has gotten a lot rougher since I did it last time. I then headed to Orvis Hot Springs for some relaxation. I love the healing hot water. I made a few calls and tried to come up with a plan for the next day. I was feeling pretty worked but I figured I still had some left in me. Gary Fondl was starting to feel better after being sick so wedecided that the Tuning Forks on Torreys would be the target. We met up in Frisco at 5:30 and were on our way. From the start we knew that the weather would be an issue. We made decent time to the base and kicked our way up the line. The new snow was balling up on our crampons every couple steps so it was a bit of a chore getting up. With the weather rolling in around us we decided that if the clouds got dark over head that we would bail. About 100′ from the ridge and the top of the line we decided to call it. Neither of us like being exposed to electricity very much and with such a great ski as our reward the decision was an easy one. Both of us have skied from the summit so who cares.
The snow was really nice. The skiers left side of the gully offered perfect corn snow. We yo-yoed down the line taking pictures and loving every minute of it. The exit zone offered some short steeps and the road walk out provided fine views of a great ski.
Enjoy the pics
